Screen Printing at

University Graphic Systems

Concept

I designed this project as an intern under the guidance of the Specialty Printing manager at the University Graphic Systems.

This project was created in order to learn the process of screen printing from start to finish. I designed this graphic in Adobe Illustrator, inspired by Tyler the Creator’s song 911/Mr. Lonely.

Process

After designing the graphic, I printed it onto a translucent vinyl and taped it onto an emulsified screen to prep for exposure. Then, I rinsed off the parts that were left unexposed in order to leave space for the paint to come through and screen printed on a variety of substrates: paper, canvas, cotton, and denim.

Outcome

Throughout the screen printing process, I learned about the technicalities of designing for output, such as the minimum stroke weight I could use in order to maintain a solid line when printing.

I also found that the process of screen printing took a lot of trial and error; however, experimenting with different substrates allowed me to discover which ones would print the best.

This was a valuable project that allowed me to explore a different medium and learn about a new process while exercising my creativity.
